3.2.4

In the Efficiency Scenario a sharp increase in mobility by rail arises as a substitute for road transport, thanks to the inter-modal coordinated STS approach and the smart logistics system, to make the most of the current rail network and of rail's higher efficiency when compared to the fuel-powered road mode.

This transition is driven by the need to absorb a significant portion of road mobility, which, in principle, can be more problematic to completely electrify, although the option of electric trucks with replacement batteries at final destination and a network of electric recharging stations distributed along the main routes may also be adequate.

In the BAU Scenario road and maritime modes have such high mobility when compared to other modes that they require an amplification of the graph's scale.
