BAU DEMAND SCENARIO

WITH 100% RENEWABLE PRODUCTION

This case covers energy consumption (both electricity and fuel) in the BAU Scenario with only renewable sources. The high demand for fuel in this scenario makes it necessary to oversize the power system (ten times larger, compared to the consumption needed to be met) to generate a large surplus of renewable electricity, that would be used in producing hydrogen as a necessary fuel.

Covering the consumption in the BAU Scenario with a 100% renewable system is much cheaper than a system with fossil and nuclear fuels. The cost of the 100% renewable option in 2050 would be only slightly higher than the cost of supplying 2007 consumption with fossil and nuclear fuels –despite increased consumption in 2050– and far less than supplying the 2007 power consumption with a 100% renewable option. This decrease in cost is mainly due to the maturity of the technology.
