You are in: Transport / Consumption per mode of transport
/ Comparison between the specific consumption of different modes of freight transport
In the BAU Scenario the aeroplane mode presents such a high specific consumption as compared to the other modes, that it requires an amplification of the graph's scale to distinguish them. Road has the next highest consumption out of the remaining modes of transport. In this Scenario rail is the most efficient, but while intelligence has yet to be introduced, its modal distribution is limited to very low values.
In the Efficiency Scenario the main change is that the specific consumption of modes of road transport is significantly diminished, so, towards the end of the Scenario, the values are similar to those in the most efficient modes.
However, rail freight presents a significantly higher efficiency, which is why in this Scenario the aim is to favour a relevant modal shift to this mode, supported by a smart transport system.
